When I first started at The New Yorker, they would throw an anniversary party every year. It was great fun, with lots of dancing. They stopped having those bashes roughly 10 years ago- although they would sometimes have a pizza party in the office, in more recent years. But tonight, in celebration of the 100th anniversary, Michael and I are going to a bit fancier they are throwing in a restaurant in NYC. So I thought I’d draw people at a party!
As I drew them, my brain made up mini- stories about what was going on. That’s what cartoonists do- we watch everyone and make stuff up. Sometimes we take bits of what’s said, gestures, expressions.
Below is a drawing I did at around 6 years old. I vividly recall creating these people and the stories behind them and their interactions. My parents liked the throw parties! And I threw some later when I became a grown-up.
Togetherness and dancing, what’s better than that?
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow!
I enjoy all your work and loved to see your 6 year old self creating creating…
I’m an only child portrait artist who grew up drawing faces and eyes and noses. Adults were a mystery to me and now I know I drew them to try and understand adults. Still drawing at 80 btw. 😎
Thanks for the smile. You were clearly a gifted child.
