The quick sketch below is in my collected live-drawings from the Oscars 2022 in a previous post, but I just felt the urge to repost this it by itself.
If you didn’t watch the Oscars, and haven’t seen the clip of this interaction, it’s here.
Lady Gaga has worked with show business legends over the years, and I cynically thought it was a bit of a gimmick. Maybe I’m wrong, because she looked genuinely caring towards Liza as she helped her do the announcment for Best Picture. It was touching moment that sort of got lost because it came after the Will Smith aggression towards Chris Rock.
Liza M. appears to be not well as Gaga helped her, and in those few moments I found warmth and hope. As an older person (not yet Liza M’s age!), I often feel not seen by the younger generation. I do wish the generations got along better; older people also don’t appreciate the struggles of the young as much as we perhaps should.
It definitely is very strange getting older, you—at least I—still feel like you’re 32. However, I know it is a gift to grow old; it just takes adjustment.
Here are a few cartoons I’ve done on the subject. I know I have more, these were just readily available on my desktop! If I find more, I will add them later.
Thanks for being here!
My book is available at Oblong Books, here, where you can also get a signed, personalized copy! Or you can order from anywhere, and Amazon of course.
I love all these, Liza. I'm so glad that you drew this (in my view) genuinely kind moment. And I'm an old lady too. I love the point you made about we older folks not always appreciating the struggles of the young, either.
