President Biden spoke in South Carolina today at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where a white supremacist killed nine people in 2015. South Carolina, where African Americans make up about 60 percent of the Democratic electorate, hosts the party’s first-in-the-nation primary on Feb. 3. He’s hoping to shore up his somewhat lagging support from the Black community. President Biden is the first sitting president to speak at at the lecturn of the historic church.
While speaking, protestors chanted out for a ceasefire in Gaza, interupting the President. Biden handled it beautifully, and said he understands their passion and is doing everything he can. He let them express themselves for a moment and said, “It’s okay, it’s okay.” You can see the video below (2:42 is where the interuption begins). For me, it shows Biden’s compassion and experience. After the protestors where escorted out, the crowd chanted “four more years” multiple times.
This is the kind of person we need right now. Calm, thoughtful, caring, understanding.
On another note, I am designing chocolates with a friend who is a chocolatier. We collaborated last year, and it was so fun! His candy is delicious and I love trying to design for a different medium and for a good cause. The little round choclates will have my drawings on them, and we will donate a percentage of sales to a charity. Our theme this year has to do with peace and diversity.
Here below is the link to pre-order from Clandestine Arts, ready by Valentine’s Day! Below the drawing is the copy that Jonathan is sending out to his list—he sells out fast so put your order in! He always designs a little booklet that describes the flavors he creates, has some of my drawings, explains the theme and where the money will go (we haven’t decided that yet!).

“Last year, my friend Liza Donnelly and I collaborated on a "cartoons and chocolates" edition that you all seemed to enjoy. So, we are back at it with a new one for this February!
Liza, a cartoonist for The New Yorker magazine, is doing wonderful work using drawing to communicate, and she's been busy! Earlier this year she collaborated with cellist Yo-Yo Ma on-stage; he played, she live-drew, and they talked about creativity.
Among many other things, Liza's involved with Cartooning for Peace, so we decided to pick up on that theme and dedicate this collection to celebrating our need to embrace diversity and love each other. The designs and flavors will follow that lead, along with a bunch of cartoons in the booklet that goes with the chocolates.”
Love that drawing. It reminds me of a doco on the BBC about the many, many Israelis & Palestinians who are happily integrated in their daily lives.
The interruption occurs at 7:42 into the Pres.’s talk rather than 2:42. Thanks for posting this, Liza.
