Lovely comments about Hollander. How important it is to have people who inspire. It's amazing how our lives have changed and our assumptions. Just saw Priscilla--leaving Netflix--and it reminded me of the emptiness of my head in the late 50s, early 60s. All movie magazines, glamour, and "Love." Had no career aspirations. I call it the bread and butter plate training. I knew how to set a table. Had no idea I had to make a self. Watching Priscilla as she lives the fangirl dream and suffers for us all, I was amazed that she actually had the gumption to leave him.(What was interesting to me is how very boring the study of female grooming practices was, but the film has stuck with me for the entire week.) The current attempt to return women to uncontrolled reproduction is the fantasy of complete service to men. Thank goodness for you feminist cartoonists who wake us up and make us laugh.
This is News just in? Wow, I’ll scrambled and go to read more.
The fact that this medication is needed for many dynamics regarding pregnancies, miscarriages, and so much more. To control it as though it is an on and off switch… It ain’t that simple! I hope I’m understanding what I’m reading here. SCOTUS voted to OK the mailing?… Wow…
Update: I now read that Alito took two days before he published the ruling, which is very temporary… Good only till May 10. But it did turn out to be true…
Prayers and fingers crossed… Authors conclude with the fact that five rightwing Catholic men sitting on the Supreme Court have the power to make a decision that controls the bodily autonomy of 1/2 the population (the females) of our country??!!
So sorry to hear about Nicole Hollander. I'll go haul out my Sylvia collection and re-read them in tribute. Thanks for keeping us informed. And, yes, WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT HATE WOMEN? Well, in part it's because that's how the country was founded. For the benefit of white, wealthy, Christian MEN. Period. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
That was a great read on Nicole Hollander and seriously funny drawings. Thanks for the link to her Obituary. Trying to hang in there. Such an ugly war with Iran. I worry for our country and our armed forces.
we are in the hands of an old fool whose only joy is being mean spirited. urge your friends to vote! when he is gone, and his cabal of greedy idiots with him, I hope the next president will start by removing all traces of Trump. hope the Met Gala is a bust. it's not in fashion to support this!
Thanks for the Nicole Hollander piece. I loved Sylvia, and didn't know of NIcole's passing. Just thought of Carol Tyler, a different kind of feminist cartooning. I suppose you are also aware of her work, she was of the R.Crumb crowd in the past, not that she should need a famous man to promote her work. She is more of a long form cartoonist, at least after the earliest stuff with underground comics. I discovered her recently. (Haven't seen your film yet, so don't know who is included.)
I am sorry this is the first I have heard of Hollander. I like what you showed us and will have to look into her work more thoroughly! And..YES! I have always wondered what any man would do if they found themselves pregnant or even with a period for a few months... they probably could not handle it very well! Also, being treated the way women are routinely treated would be demoralizing to them. An interesting comment by a trans woman I met recently who finally transitioned very much later in life, not being able to hide or deny her status as a person; that even being aware of misogyny and trying to be careful about it when she presented as a man, she was shocked at how horribly women are treated. Fully as a woman she could feel and live the experience even being already aware that it was an issue for women.. I thought that was really insightful. "Enlightened" males may think they understand, but not really! I put the word enlightened in quotes, because I am not convinced that there are many of them around. Sadly so.
Bezos controls so much with Amazon it's time for some anti-trust thinking. The biggest problem with the privileged wealthy is that they never have enough. They've lost all sense of "enough" while they exploit everyone and everything they can.
Thanks for remembering Nicole. As you know, I worked with her on six books. What did I love best about her? In my dealings with this sassy, smart, satiric jack-of-all-trades, (and master of all) individual, she never once “lorded it” over me; never treated me as the neophyte I was; never acted with the excessive hubris one often finds in successful people. She treated me as a professional…a bit loopy…but nonetheless filled with ideas and humor we could mesh and combine and brainstorm through to enhance each other’s work. We created six books, made people laugh, and were able to afford the cream to go with the salmon we fed our cats. What more could we want? In our later email correspondence and cards, she was Sylvia to a T, always with the quick-witted remark. I was honored and blessed and oh-so-fortunate to have worked with her. Her humor was off-the-charts spot on, unique.
I’m curious if anyone else shares my fatigue over seeing any more depictions of Bezos and his wife. Or Musk..
Why do they think we want to see them?
Once is enough.
I honestly have additional trouble seeing past her upper new fake anchors so obviously hugely adrift. And the Botox
…
Don’t get me wrong: if that sort of work is honestly needed for health reasons I’m all for it.
But the current effort of attractive women adding extremely bulky bowling ball upper body bulges and facial / bulbous lip injections - as what seems to be an effort to qualify for entry passes to Maralago Clone Central -

Supreme Court ruled in favor of mailing out the abortion medicines

Your cartoon is spot on! Also loved the Hollander retrospective.

Thanks for bringing Nicole Hollander to my attention. What a woman; humble, generous and talented... and inspired by you!
We've rolled back to the Gilded Age.

I like your insight. It is extraordinary that the way greed overtakes them.

Very good opening cartoon.
Bezos: I do not understand why some women want to alter their appearances to meet the strange expectations of the super rich (the Mar-a-Lago look).
Nicole Hollender! I enjoyed reading Sylvia for years.
So appreciate your thoughts and art!

It all just boggles my mind.
