Federal Appeals Court unanimously rejected Trump’s claim of absolute immunity for his role in plotting to subvert the results of the 2020 election. This is an historic ruling. His lawyers said they will appeal to the Supreme Court, which they have to file by Monday. Listening to lawyers on CNN today, they are unsure how the Supreme Court will rule, but they point out that this APpeals court ruling is so strong, it may have impact. What happens after the Supreme Court rules is not clear to me. So many cases, I get confused as to how they all affect one another.
In the 57-page ruling, the court said, in part,
“For the purpose of this criminal case, former President Trump has become citizen Trump, with all of the defenses of any other criminal defendant,” the panel wrote. “But any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as president no longer protects him against this prosecution. At bottom, former President Trump’s stance would collapse our system of separated powers by placing the president beyond the reach of all three branches,” they wrote. “Presidential immunity against federal indictment would mean that, as to the president, the Congress could not legislate, the executive could not prosecute and the judiciary could not review. We cannot accept that the office of the presidency places its former occupants above the law for all time thereafter.”
This decision is important in the fight for our democracy.
On another note, here is a New Yorker cartoon from a while ago that I just ran into. I thought you might enjoy it. I bet the number of products Trump uses rivals Melania’s. Come to think of it, Trump is encroaching personified. He is an encroacher. He encroaches. Encroacher in Chief. (Forgive me)
If I recall, this drawing was done after reading an article about the number of products some people use for their “personal care.” Plus, I think I wanted to use the word “encroach.” Question: what would the meaning be if the genders were switched? Food for thought….
Happy Tuesday, see you tomorrow.
It’s a good day, it’s getting my hopes up….
The cartoon is 👌🏼. I actually remember our son first referring to what was in his hair as ‘product’. His dad’s eyebrow hit his hair line.
If she were talking to him, she could have a small misty aura representing scent, while he could be s belching smokestack of cologne
Why don't you do a Rose Bud riff on Citizen Trump?
