On the subway today, I saw something unusual. So, as I sometimes do—although I haven’t done this in a bit—I drew it on my iPhone with my finger. The train was particularly herky jerky today (the #1 line uptown, for those of you who care to know), en route to Harlem. It wasn’t very crowded.
Here is a sped up video grab of the sketch.
Here is the drawing. I see that I forgot to color in her phone and part of her shirt.
I’ll show you the photo I took of her. At one point she sat up, so I knew her hair was very blond. I purposefully made the bag she was leaning on dark blue to distinguish it from her black shirt. I forgot to give her an eye, but then I really couldn’t see her eyes, I faked the angle a little bit. Also, it’s not clear to me what I was doing with the railings on the left, I messed that up too.
What interested me was her posture. And that she had the chutzba to lie down on the train. She seemed very young, her legs were quite skinny, which you can’t see from the photo. She got off before I did because suddenly I looked up and she was gone.
Happy Monday. Stay cool!! It’s very hot here —a good day to lie down in the air conditioned subway and watch a movie, I guess.
While we don't live in NYC, we have visited many times and always use the subway on several different lines. We have not had an occasion to cause us alarm. It's quite a microcosm of individuals mostly just people getting from one place to work, eat, visit friends, go to a ball game or just headed home. I marvel at how you came sketch this in a moving subway car. Not always a smooth ride.
So NYC. The sketch is perfect. Miss the City. Unless you’re from there the feel of being comfortable as you go from point a to b is hard to describe.
