I like fennel. I like the taste, and how they look. It’s as if an alien designed them, they are bizarre looking. AND the vegetable’s name is funny.
Last time I cooked them, I did not save the tops, even though I know I am supposed to. I frankly don’t know what to do with them. I imagine the fennel police catching me for not using the tops.
I started thinking that I should do a drawing about fennel, so I looked up what the tops might be called, if anything. To my delight, they are called fronds. Perfect. Fennel fronds. I drew the above, a woman incensed that her partner is about to do something with her fronds.
Here is another food cartoon in the same vein. Not the risotto police (there probably are some), but the risotto hot line.
I spent the day with my good friend and colleague, Roz Chast. We had lunch and went to a toy store, it was really fun. Later back at her home and in her studio, she showed me her collection of New Yorker cartoonist silk scarves (yes, it was once a thing). I admired her James Thurber one and she said, “I have another, and am going to give it to you.” She is so nice, I love this scarf and can’t wait to frame it.
We laughed a lot and I’m tired. I did not look at the news today, it was kinda nice to take a day off.
I hope you are having a good Saturday!
Fennel in the garden is great for swallowtail caterpillers!
That is a great scarf!
