I drew this last week. As I look at it now, I realize: this is a dark cartoon.
Sometimes you draw stuff and then don’t think about it. You just move on.
The words here came first. It seems to me, in restrospect, that when I thought of the words “Turkey Tips,” I knew I had something. But then I had to ponder, who should be giving out the tips? What is the twist? Why? Probably when I thought of a turkey giving out tips, I didn’t hesitate.
But what does this say? That this turkey is selling out his fellow avians? Is this turkey simply resigned to fate? That people will be eating turkeys come Thursday, and he/she may as well be helpful and make some extra cash? Is he/she not concerned he/she will become a turkey tip on a Thanksgiving table? And what the heck does his/her expression even mean?
These are questions I cannot answer, even though I drew it.
Is it because I am having an inner debate about whether or not to eat turkey? I will cook a turkey on Thursday for my family. However, as a pescatarian, I may not eat any.
Psychoanalizying cartoons is probably not a good idea. I would not describe myself as a dark person, but maybe we all have that darkness lingering inside.
But, I ask you: did you laugh?
Yes, I laughed. I prefer not to analyze it myself, but it does have a whiff of Chas Addams in it.....
Charles Schultz beat you to the punch -- I love Peanuts .... but Woodstock pulling on the turkey wishbone with Snoopy always struck me as a bit dark .... :)
