I’ve been focused on women’s rights for decades now, drawing and writing about it. When it became a thing, I was happy to hear a day was set (March 8th) to raise awareness on the rights of women around the world. Every little bit helps.
One of the best passages in President Biden’s State of the Union Address last night was about women.
“There are state laws banning the freedom to choose, criminalizing doctors, forcing survivors of rape and incest to leave their states to get the treatment they need.
Many of you in this chamber and my predecessor are promising to pass a national ban on reproductive freedom.
My God, what freedom else would you take away?
Look, its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court majority wrote the following — and with all due respect, Justices — “Women are not without electoral or political power. You’re about to realize just how much you were right about that.
Clearly, those bragging about overturning Roe v. Wade have no clue about the power of women. But they found out. When reproductive freedom was on the ballot, we won in 2022 and 2023. And we’ll win again in 2024.
If you, the American people, send me a Congress that supports the right to choose, I promise you I will restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land again.
Folks, America cannot go back.”
Towards the end, Biden reminded us that he was Vice President to the first Black President, and now President to the first woman Vice President. When he said that, the chamber cheered and applauded, Vice President Kamala Harris, seated right behind him, gave him a warm smile. Then she rose to applaud the President.
Remarkable and important to remember.
I’m heading to Austin Texas to speak at SXSW. I will be talking about women cartoonists and the importance of humor to bring change.
I will check in tomorrow, happy Friday!
Exactly! Safe trip!
Enjoy Austin! Great event.
