I know hurricanes can be serious, deadly business. But in this drawing that was in The New Yorker, I am making fun of the weather channels. They always seem to whisk us up into a frenzy as soon as they can. With little or no need. Have you noticed that? Anything to get you to check the weather app on your phone (guilty as charged in doing so). Fear is a great way to get eyeballs.
That said, the storm heading our way now, named Lee, could be really horrible.
I am lucky that I don’t live in a hurricane prone part of the East coast, but they are saying tropical storm Lee might even hit our area. Right now, it’s more than a raindrop, it’s a category 4 storm, but it’s still far out in the ocean and they don’t know which way it will turn.
Here is another hurricane drawing.
Speaking of fear, I am rewatching Michael Moore’s Bowling For Columbine. A lot of the movie is about how the American media stirs up—in fact creates— fear and hatred, particularly fear of those who have black or brown skin. It is a way to sell guns. Fear sells. I recommend watching it, if you haven’t.
Speaking of fear, it was good to see that the ex-leader of the Proud Boys, Erique Tarrio, will be behind bars for 22 years— at least that’s the sentence he was given yesterday for his role in the January 6th Insurrection. This is our democracy working.
I hope you are having a good Tuesday! Sorry this is such a downer newsletter. To maybe lighten your day, here are some illustrations about fashion that I did for an Italian magazine today:
Hurricanes & Columbine……🤔 Maybe this is why you burst into color at the end? Love the cartoons, as always.
Second day in a row, thanks for drawings, Liza, because they really cheered me up. Had a lovely breakfast with a close friend, but it ended on a contentious note. Then had lunch and streamed a movie with my former mentee (now age 19) -- it being the very intense, violent 1984 "Dune" if you want to know. Could use a stiff drink, actually, but two crazy funny cartoons about hurricanes (unlikely seeming topic) snapped me back to my pretty damn good life in 2023. And I see below that my lovely, talented wife got here before me. Perfecto!
