Today was the final day of drawing in Oslo for the Freedom Forum. I should have planned to stay an extra day to draw around the city….maybe next time. Tomorrow, back in the States, you can expect me to get back to my usual writing/drawing about politics and sharing of cartoons. I hope you enjoyed my foray into global issues and Oslo.
Today was mostly small panels and gatherings. The first one I went to was about immigration and human trafficing:
The second was a duo who spoke about self care for activists. It’s a stressful profession, and the tools they shared—like meditation and finding community— were really interesting.
My favorite of the day was a panel called “The Power of the Moving Image.” It was all about documentaries, and was fascinating, if a little depressing. Documentary filmaking in the US is going through difficult times, but the three who spoke felt that this is possibly a phase, and that there are new models for distribution on the horizon. The panelists were Jake Swantko, Janice Englehart and Vanessa Hope.
This is a sketch of two people just hanging out.
And finally, I drew an interview as it was being filmed live on Instagram for the forum. Here is the link. I drew really fast for this one, I felt under the gun, time-wise!
And the video grab, too! Very meta.
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow! Heading home.
Such a worthwhile gathering - and as usual your sketches bring it to life so effectively. Are there people/universities/ngo’s here that support this effort?
Thanks so much for these. Sometimes activists can think they're out there alone in the wilderness. So glad to know of this annual conference.
