I started writing the piece below earlier today. In the meantime, I drew the man above, waiting for the train. I thought I would give you both today!
Today, The NY Times reported that Trump filed another brief that urged the Supreme Court to rule that he should be immune from prosecution for what he did while President. Hasn’t he already asked them this?
The Times goes on to report that the special counsel prosecuting Trump, Jack Smith, wrote, “it would upend understandings about presidential accountability that have prevailed throughout history while undermining democracy and the rule of law — particularly where, as here, a former president is alleged to have committed crimes to remain in office despite losing an election, thereby seeking to subvert constitutional procedures for transferring power and to disenfranchise millions of voters.”
Smith added that there was “no reason to fear tit-for-tat prosecutions that would chill other presidents from taking decisive action.” And this is the sentence that I find fascinating: “That dystopian vision runs contrary to the checks and balances built into our institutions and the framework of the Constitution.” Dystopian is defined as “an imaginary society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible.” This is how Trump sees the world; he believes that just like him, everyone operates out of hatred and greed.
President Biden is the exact opposite. He sees good in people, trusts and wants to help. This country has a lot of problems and we have made a lot of mistakes; we are a work in progress. But I do believe that most Americans are hopeful people who believe we can be better.
Happy Tuesday, see you tomorrow!
Donald J Trump is driven by the fear that everyone will discover and confirm his father’s opinion of him, that he is, simply put, a loser.
I wonder which SCOTUS and Congress will finally have the backbone to establish that a POTUS can and will be indicted, tried, convicted, sentenced and incarcerated for breaking the law while in office instead of delaying things and hoping time and elections absolves them of their need for courage. If this country is going to survive, one of these bodies will have to draw that line!
That’s the most frustrating part of this, where justice is swift and severe if you shoplift a loaf of bread from a Walmart, but when you try to subvert an entire country, you use your elected office as a shield, you’ll not serve a day in prison because our SCOTUS justices and elected Reps and Senators are too cowardly to actually uphold their oaths of office.
