This drawing is not something I said or heard someone say, althought it’s true I was in the theater last night seeing the Barbie Movie (I’m working on my thoughts to share with you soon). I drew the above a few weeks ago, because it seems like makers of movies are really trying hard to get us back in the theater. This includes making merchandizing movies such as the Barbie movie. I am all-in for this effort to get us back into the movie houses, because I love watching films with a crowd on a big screen. It was a fun weekend, knowing others were going to see Oppenheimer… and well, yes, Barbie.
Totally unrelated, today I was in the New York Public Library again, researching in The New Yorker archives for my documentary. This man was sitting across from me, and I drew him on my iPad.
He was a very interesting looking person with gold rimmed glasses, a headband and shorts. I am fascinated by my fellow researchers. What are they looking for? What are they writing? I wish I could ask them all. The room today was pretty busy, about 10 of us were quietly handling delicate papers and books, occasionally snapping photos of the items with our cell phones. The only sounds in the room were hushed exchanges as we each retrieved and returned boxes to the cheerful librarians. At one point, the gentility of it all was exploded when an extremely loud alarm went off and red lights flashed. It was actually really scary, I have to say the first thing that came to my mind was 9/11. Our head librarian in the room reassured us that this happens frequently and that all will be fine. As if her children, we all seemed to relax. It turned out to be a false fire alarm.
I leave you with a photograph. This is a shot taken of a desk at The New Yorker in the room where the cartoons were decided, roughly around 1951. You can see cartoons by James Thurber on the wall. I have no idea who took it.
I hope you had a lovely Tuesday. See you tomorrow.
Liza, Thank you. It occurs to me that you may be the only normal person that I know. Cheers.
I loved “going” to the library with you!
