You all know I love what our country stands for, I love the beautiful melting pot that is NYC, and I love water towers. Had to draw the above.
This afternoon, the NYC comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by ICE agents in downtown Manhattan as he tried to help a man in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Center. Lander had spent the morning observing immigration proceedings and, as he has for weeks, as told to an AP reporter, he was there to “accompany” some immigrants out of the building. Mr. Lander linked arms with one individual who was about to be detained, and asked the masked ICE agents if they had a judicial warrant, this according to one of the videos posted on social media. He was finally pulled away by ICE and handcuffed. The man Lander was trying to protect was also arrested. Lander was just released from custody and gave a press conference, the man he was trying to help is still in custody. Lander said we are normalizing this type of treatment of immigrants and families, and he said he will keep coming back to help them not be detained illegally. Due process is afforded to all in this country.
“Our rule of law is not fine and our democracy is not fine,” he said.
We know Trump and deputy chief of staff Steven Miller who has been given the role of directing all the ICE raids, have instructed ICE to double down on agressive raids in major cities like LA, Chicago and NYC; Trump calls them sanctuary cities and liberal, socialist places that harbor criminals. Miller is trying to meet a quota of arrests; and these type of ICE raids are meant to intimidate. Trump’s Office of Homeland Security is putting out the lie that Mr. Lander “was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer.” If you look at the video, he assaulted no one.
I am glad Lander did this, it brings attention to what is going on in immigration centers in New York and elsewhere.
On the world stage for a nano-second (although one would argue he is always on that stage because his behavior worries the world), Trump left the G7 early, saying he had to deal with the Iran/Isreali crisis. My sense is it is a very uncomfortable for him to be with other democratic world leaders, it’s a land mine of cameras and video and he might embarass himself. Better to get in and out quickly. I really hope Trump stays out of the Iran/Israeli conflict. He keeps changing his thoughts on the crisis, causing world leaders immense worry.
After the shocking assisinations of two state senators in Minnesota, Trump refused to call Governor Tim Walz, saying it was a waste of time, that “Walz was incompetent.” Trump is such a horrible man
That’s it for me today. I hope your Tuesday is okay, see you tomorrow. As always, thanks for being here, I really appreciate you.
“Trump is such a horrible man”. Succinct. Somehow comforting to see someone say it. We need to collect the identities of all these ICE employees who are acting without constitutional authority, and look forward to a reckoning with them.
ICE employees were made for this- you get to be a bully, dress up in gear and masks, and show off your disdain for law and order. waiting impatiently for their meltdown.
