Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is expected to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago today. The NY Times wrote that Speaker Johnson’s many “duties include the difficult task of managing Donald J. Trump.” It seems to me that it’s the other way around. Trump is managing Johnson and all the other MAGA Republicans. It’s astounding to me how much control a private citizen has over our government. As much as Biden is trying to counter that, our legislative branch is in turmoil because of Trump.
Heck, our world is in turmoil because of Trump.
The Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida visited the White House yesterday—I love looking at photos of State Dinners to see who is invited and what they wear. Kishida also addressed a joint session of Congress, during which he made an impassioned plea for democracy around the world and for democratic countries to stand together to fight authoritarian governments. From what I read (Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter today quotes him at length, read it), it seems as though he was speaking directly to the Maga GOP. He urged democratic countries to stand behind Ukraine; if not, Putin will continue his aggression not only in Ukraine but beyond. It’s our duty as Americans to support freedom.
Trump could care less about freedom, moral choices, or helping others. My drawing above is my depiction of how he feels about the rest of the world. However as I was drawing it, I realized that it is not acurate for two reasons (it is a cartoon, anyway): first, he probably cannot physically move his legs to kick anything like that, and secondly, he wants the world to be HIS.
On another note, I drew this grouping of people yesterday on my phone while riding the A train. Couldn’t resist the assemblage of hair/beanie in one corner of the crowded train.
Happy Friday, thanks for being here!
I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments! Thanks for reminding me that I am not alone in thinking that Trump is responsible for much of what is going wrong in our country.
Well said Liza.
