We have been witness to an amazing woman leader over the course of three presidencies. Nancy Pelosi has been our guardian and champion. I share some of my drawings of her in recent years.
I know you have heard the news that Pelosi is stepping down from her position as Speaker of the House, the first woman to hold that position. Pelosi says it’s time for new leadership. No one can fill her shoes, we have been lucky to have her.
One thing I like about her is her ability to be controlled, yet seemingly honest with her emotions in front of cameras. You knew when Pelosi was pissed off. You recall when she ripped up her copy of Trump’s State of The Union speech after he delivered it. What fearlessness! She realized the importance of visual theater in politics (particularly under that President), and went for it. I recorded the moment in a drawing, and shared on Twitter in real time.
You also knew when she was happy. That same year, when she took the oath to become Speaker of the House, she surrounded herself with children on the House floor. She was beaming. This was the first time anyone had done that. I recorded the moment in a drawing.
I was extremely pleased to hear who is the front runner to take Democratic leadership in her stead: Hakeem Jeffries.
Finally, a cartoon I drew in 2019 right before Trump was to be impeached in 2019. It was quite a rivalry.
Thank you, Nancy Peloisi, for your service and strong leadership. I hope you have inspired many young people. I know you inspired me.
There was a great Front Line episode a few months back called The Power of Pelosi. Available via PBS streaming.
Yes, exactly. She will be a hard act to follow, to say the least, but I am hopeful and think she's doing the right thing. I would love to see Hakeem Jeffries step into her very high heels. And I love the cartoons and drawings, Liza. Thank you for this.
