Reading Drawing Captions From This Week's New Yorker

An interesting exercize to hear and not see

I’m no actor, I do the best I can reading these. Hope you enjoy them! The first drawing in this week’s issue is one of mine (above)— it doesn’t have a caption but rather a title. I read it anyway just because it’s mine:) Using titles for the idea is an option that many cartoonists use, and one I love to try from time-to-time.

The idea behind this reading of the captions for me is to see how the sentence as written stands up without the image. It shouldn’t have to, that’s the point of cartoons. They should go together sort of effortlessly. But the writing of captions is not to be dismissed, it can be a difficult thing to get right, and I just thought this would be a fun exercise to hear the words.

I noticed a lot of the drawings this week have captions that are questions. Interesting—just a coincidence, I’m sure. Tell me if any of the captions made you laugh, or if you could envision what the drawing was by hearing the caption.

Happy Friday, see you tomorrow!
