I love New York City.
This cartoon was one I drew in the early 1980’s—it was one of my early ones published by The New Yorker. Back then, the editor loved captionless cartoons (or so I was told after the fact, I didn’t draw them knowing that), and they bought a few from me. I also love the captionless form, but it’s also hard to sustain. Also, they ran more sequential ones like this. The editor was William Shawn, and the art editor was Lee Lorenz. It’s been an honor to be a part of The New Yorker for so long!

On another note…..
I am heading to Princeton, N.J. today to speak at the Present Day Club.
Here is a bit of their history:
“On January 22, 1898 twenty-nine Princeton women, including Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, met to consider forming a club. Less than two months later the first meeting of The Present Day Club was held, at which time a constitution and by-laws were adopted. The women further decided:
“The object of this club shall be to create an intellectual and social center of thought and action among the women of Princeton and to stimulate an interest in science, literature, art, and social and ethical culture.”
It should be fun- I’ve never been to a “ladies club!” I’ll show some cartoons, and sign copies of Very Funny Ladies.
I have a long personal history with New Jersey. My father was born in Trenton, my great-great-grandfather and great-grandfather were both mayors of Trenton, I spent summers in Barnegut Bay, and I married aman from New Jersey!
