Last night, I watched the returns from the Georgia Senate race with trepidation. Flashbacks to the presidential election night of 2016. Flashbacks to even when Reagan was elected president.
There was the dread feeling again, is this who we are, really?
We are and we aren’t. Herschel Walker was a pawn for the GOP, as they cynically placed a person of color with a fan base (football) into the running to win the seat. It didn’t work. Trump’s hand-picked guy didn’t win. The actions of the GOP were (and are) racist and insulting to Black folks.
A win for reality. And for passion, caring, wanting to help, wanting to serve, intelligence, thoughtfulness, compassion—all characteristics of Raphael G. Warnock.
But Walker got close to winning, and that demonstrates in part who we are. We need to pay heed to this.
But I want to say thank you to Senator Warnock and his team who brought me hope.
I have a friend in Atlanta who sat in on one of his q&a sessions, and described him as the most wonderful, caring, funny, intelligent man. She called him “The Future.” I certainly hope so.
And thanks to the thousands who volunteered for his multiple campaigns. And especially the millions of voters who voted for him!!
