Today’s newsletter is in three seperate, quite different, sections.
I was unable to watch the hearings in their entirety yesterday, but I caught some. Listened to about an hour while walking in the city. It’s frightening how close we came to a violent revolution and to losing our democratic government. What is clear is that we have to be VERY careful as to how the next election is handled. We were told in the hearing yesterday that there continues to be a clear and present danger to our democracy. This is a drawing I did during the last election, when we saw how he was trying to manipulate voters. He and his supporters continue to be a major threat.
And the drawing below is one I did at the 2016 Democratic Convention. Obama’s words resonate: we have to do something, not just complain. At the very least, we have to vote, and help get out the vote. The Trump contingent is smart and devious, they will find a way to steal the next election(s) if they can.
Yesterday, I was taping a video for an organization called Kid lit TV. They are a wonderful group, and I was invited to do a video about drawing cartoons for their feature called “Ready, Set, Read!” I have written and illustrated my own kid’s books, nine of them! First was a series (seven books) about a boy and his dog and dinosaurs for Scholastic Inc. They are not in print, but available used on Amazon, or as ereaders. Here is one:
And I did two for Holiday House a few years ago, they are still in print. Here’s one.
I love doing books for children, and speaking to children as well. It’s a lovely distraction from politics.
Finally, yesterday I live drew in NYC, and I wanted to share that with you. I was unable to figure out how to embed the Instagram video into this post, so here is the link. This sort of live drawing on Instagram is something I started during the pandemic, when I did it daily at 5pm from my studio. All of those videos are in my Instagram archive. I talked and drew about the day’s events and I interacted with my followers about the pain of what was going on….from the pandemic to BLM to the election (the drawing of Trump above was one such drawing). It was helpful for me to connect with others and draw. Now I try to do this a few times a week, either from my studio or from the street, wherever I am. Follow me on Instagram to get alerts as to when I am live. Please say hello when you do!
Here is yesterday’s drawing, two unsuspecting people just sitting having coffee. I was terrified—not sure why—that they would notice what I was doing!
I love NYC and one of my favorite things to do is live draw on the streets.
Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend, and see you on social media.
Love this, Liza.
