Waking a little later than usual today, when I saw that it was 8:45 am, I bolted out of bed. I needed to see President Volodomir Zelinsky’s address to a joint session of the US Congress, scheduled to be broadcast at 9am EST.
It was powerful. Wearing an unassuming green teeshirt, not having shaved for weeks, his deep voice revealed an exhaustion mixed with anger and love. He spoke of his Ukraine’s pain, heartache and his people’s strength. He asked for help, and then asked for more help. He showed a painfully real, at times graphic video about his country, showing the happy times and now the devastation and death. He thanked us for our support and then appealed directly to our President Biden in his now famous line, “To be a leader of the world means to be a leader of peace.” He was given a standing ovation.
I had to draw it.
Thanks, Liza. The talk, the video, everything, was very moving.
Yes.
