It’s hard not to imagine that Trump is not really running things. He’s hired people who are ruthlessly doing what he (sort of) instructed them to do. At times, it seems it’s not clear what he wants them to do; orders are given, then taken back. We had a feeling that would happen, but it’s alarming that it’s happening so fast and that the chaos and incompetance of this administration is so visible.
Nothing is going right for Trump. His so-called tariff plan is backfiring, causing economic instability, his deportations are being challanged by countless courts, his firing of thousands of government employees have been ordered to be reversed in many cases. The Supreme Court has demonstrated that it won’t give in to Trump completely. Trump’s approval rating is going down quickly, a NY Times/Siena poll shows that Americans believe he is overreaching. Millions of people are protesting in the street all over the country, in red and blue states. While we are indeed in a constitutional crisis, but signs are the resistence is working. It appears that the chaotic Trump administration may be disorganized, crippled, as it tries to fight back. Also: they do not have the right to do what they are doing.
Individuals—be they judges or attorneys or writers or university presidents or actors or private citizens— are standing up to Trump. This is what is needed in volume. Morally principled, committed Americans. As Senator Cory Booker says, we need moral leaders, not politicians.
I saw a post on Instagram the other day by the actor John Leguizamo. In his instastory, he is extremely charged up, talks right at the camera, but is addressing Democratic politicians. He says (paraphrasing here): don’t send me emails asking for $15 here, $10 there, like it’s a normal fundraising day! We need ACTION, we need everyone to act like this is a five-alarm fire. Which it is.
Speaking of which:
A federal judge in Lousianna expressed concern yesterday that a 2-year-old US citizen was deported without due process or clear cause. Born a citizen, she was deported to Honduras with her mother. On Thursday, the father filed an emergency petition to have his daughter stay in the US, the government says the mother wants the child to be deported with her. Judge Terry A. Doughty took it upon himself to try to talk to the mother, but was not able to reach her before she left the country.
“The government contends that this is all OK because the mother wishes that the child be deported with her,” wrote Judge Doughty, a conservative Trump appointee. “But the court doesn’t know that.”
This is an ongoing story that illustrates the absolute necessity of due process, how complicated any form of deportation can be.
Trump was in Vatican City to attend the Pope’s funeral, touching down for only 14 hours. A very short trip, stopping only to shake hands with some foreign leaders. He told aids he wanted to get back to his New Jersey golf course. He did meet with Volodymyr Zelensky for about 15 minutes, on folding chairs in the Vatican. It is not public what was discussed, but Trump posted later, after claiming the war was Obama and Biden’s fault, that “there was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and town over the last few days,” he wrote. “It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he‘s just tapping me along.”
Zelensky wrote on X:
“Very symbolic meeting that has potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results,” he wrote. He ended with: “Thank you
.”The above drawing was done in JFK airport as I was waiting to go to my gate. I am headed to LA to live draw Emmy House, a series of events hosted by AppleTV. I will post drawings tomorrow and throughout the week.
And this was the little guy next to me in the flight!
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow!
safe travel, hope the pug was an experienced traveler! Trump representing our country at the Vatican is such an insult to all of us.
I’m sorry but am I the only one that thinks the “father/husband” is kind of a jerk? Keep the daughter but let the wife get deported? Idk. Idk the whole story. Sounds weird.
Trump wore a blue suit when all were asked to wear black and he and Melania stepped on the carpet under the coffin. A big “NO-NO”
Imagine that, embarrassing behavior that brings us shame. Same “poop” different day.
