If any of you were around when Michael Dukakis ran for president, you will recall a photo-op that Dukakis did, sitting in a tank. Many said that this photo alone “tanked” his candidacy. I think the photos above may have done the same for Trump.
Not only do these Trump garbage truck and sanitation outfit photos look silly, it is more that he seems to have gone off the rails. Trump is running his campaign, and no one else. I can imagine him telling his people: let’s have me in a sanitation vest and ride in a truck, put my name on the side! That will remind people of Biden’s remark calling Americans garbage, and occupy the news cycle for 24 hours. But in fact the garbage comment came from his rally in NYC from a GOP vetted comic who called Puerto Ricans garbage. Biden simply stumbled on his words (a not-untypical mannerism for him), and was calling Trump garbage, not denigrating those who support him.
These “outfits” that Trump puts on, including the McDonalds bib last week, are insulting to hard working Americans who hold such jobs and have to wear them. He has nothing but contempt and disdain for hard working Amerians. I can imagine he thinks they’re “suckers” for working at hourly wage jobs, or for working at all. Trump puts these on in a misguided effort to show he is a “man of the people,” when he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and given everything.
From Heather Cox Richardson today:
“The Las Vegas Sun today ran an editorial that detailed Trump’s increasingly obvious mental lapses and concluded that Trump is “crippled cognitively and showing clear signs of mental illness.” It noted that Trump now depends “on enablers who show a disturbing willingness to indulge his delusions, amplify his paranoia or steer his feeble mind toward their own goals.” It noted that if Trump cannot fulfill the duties of the presidency, they would fall to his running mate, J.D. Vance, who has suggested “he would subordinate constitutional principles for personal profit and power.”
If this series of strange campaign spots weren’t bad enough, Trump said today that he’ll protect women. “I’m gonna do it whether the women like it or not.” This attitude towards women is so old-fashioned and wrong, and he doesn’t even realize it. He thinks it sounds strong. It plays to a certain constituency that believes women are frail and don’t know how to live life, can only cook and should be at the service of men and children. They need “protection.” In actuallity, we need be safe from men like him who have bragged about sexual assault and been found guilty of it. Any protection we need should come from our justice system, police and courts. This attitude is what we heard in 2016, in recording in which Trump said he could “grab women by the p***y, they let you do it because you’re famous.” Below is a drawing I did in 2016, right after he said those things to Billy Bush, and then he actually apologized to the media. That meant nothing.

The Harris campaign is blasting the internet with short videos and they are fantastic. https://x.com/lizadonnelly/status/1852042559465337313

Trump divides, that’s how he hopes to win votes. I don’t want to divide in what I write here, but I want to point out how unfit this man is to be leader of the free world. I don’t hate his followers, I don’t think they are bad people. I just don’t understand them. I would be willing to talk about the issues with them—we need to learn how to talk to each other again. Trump will never allow that to happen.
It’s easy to make light of a man who is not fit to run the country, while underneath, behind his laughable behavior and offensive statements, there is a deadly serious network of extremely wealthy, evil men who want to change our country. If Trump is elected, they will bolt into action to deport, oppress and drain our country of it’s values and principles. Trump is their puppet.
As Harris said the other night: Will we cede our hard-earned democracy and freedom to this man, and those who are using him, to grab unchecked power?
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow. I plan to go live in the afternoon! You will need the Substack app to join me.
So much pathology here; so difficult to get cult followers to renounce their leader. (Note: losing the election won't do it; just like a doomsday prediction failing to materialize, his followers will double down, insisting the election was rigged, further deifying their leader.)
The "I will protect you whether you like it or not" comment sends shards of ice running through my veins. It is the living definition of non-consensual, and any man who fails to see that this is not just an issue for women is a fool.
Just look at the clown in his borrowed safety vest, his face intentionally darkened. His resemblance to a minstrel in blackface is not accidental.
