The above is my drawing in this week’s New Yorker Magazine. It’s actually something I drew in aroung 2018, and the magazine had it in its bank all these years! Someone there decided to publish it this week—timely, unfortunately. The New Yorker has a huge storage of bought cartoons from a lot of us regular contributors, I don’t know how many, but I am guessing a lot. They buy something and then don’t always publish things right away, sometimes waiting for years.

Here is some of what I read today that I think noteworthy:

Trump is threatening China with more tariffs if Beijing doesn’t retreat in its threats to retaliate. The stock market plumeted, rallied and plumeted again today. This uncertainty has the markets and everyone unsettled.

After losing in a lower court, Trump asked Supreme Court to block order to return wrongly deported man. Judge Paula Xinis of the Federal District Court in Maryland had said the administration committed a “grievous error” that “shocks the conscience” by sending the migrant, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, to a notorious prison last month. Justice Roberts has ordered a stay to the ruling, giving the justices time to consider the case. Why all this effort to deport one person? It’s about court battles, and making a statement that Trump will not let up.

Another Supreme Court showdown over presidential power is likely in the case of Trump firing two independent agency board members. A lower court reinstated their jobs, but Trump will likely take this to the high court because he can. “Wilcox became the first Black woman on the NLRB after being confirmed by the Senate following her nomination by Joe Biden in 2021. She was reconfirmed after being nominated to a second term in 2023. Harris is head of a previously obscure agency whose power to review and reverse federal employee firings has now assumed central relevance in light of the mass dismissals of federal workers and government watchdogs carried out since Trump took office.” These two have been repeatedly fired and hired since Trump’s inauguration.

So may courts, lawyers, judges. So much time wasted and money spent when we could be helping people. Another day, another crazy set of actions in Trump world. And actions that affect all of us.

Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow!
