As promised, Trump initiated huge tariffs on allies and major trading partners today, Canada, Mexico and China. It rattled markets around the world and upended relations. Here is the powerful response from Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau, during which he called Trump “a smart man,” but said this was a “dumb move.”
Things are very tense. Americans are starting to feel the pinch, Europe is angry, people are being laid off. Musk called Social Security a “ponzi scheme.”
Yesterday, Trump suspended all military aid to Ukraine such as amunition, vehicles and other equipment. Today, in an effort to mend fences, Zelensky today proposed a peace plan, saying “he is willing to work “constructively” under Donald Trump’s “strong leadership” and to sign a deal giving the US access to his country’s mineral wealth.” It must be difficult for him to do that, but I know he is doing what he thinks is right for his people, even if it means making nice to a narcissistic sociopath and Russian mouthpiece.
Tonight, Trump will deliver a talk to a joint session of Congress. It is not technically a State of the Union address, although it will feel like one, because he just was inaugurated. The Democrats will be bringing as guests a lot of laid-off Federal workers and I hope they show their anger in some fashion other than that. There was talk in some circles of the Dems not even attending, but as Minority Leader Jeffries said, “it’s the people’s house.” It should not be abandoned and left to Donald Trump. I must admit it will be difficult to watch the GOP’s adoration of this man.
As I have done in the past, I will live-draw it and will post them later tonight after it’s all over. The drawing below is from his first official SOTU in 2018.
I watch this event every year, and in fact watching one and drawing on my newly gifted iPad in 2015 was the start of all my live-drawing. That was back when Twitter was a fun place. Tonight, I will live-draw for you all on Substack, also share some on Notes tonight.
Thanks for being here, see you later!
Bless your heart...I will not watch. There will be plenty of opportunities tomorrow to catch up.
My view is 47/Musk have us on a path to fairly quickly (say by the end of this year) get to martial law and then what can we do. All they are doing in the meanest and crudest ways possible have no other ends I can fathom but to create economic and social havoc to the point of mass rebellion of some sort -- at minimum large marches and such -- which they'll fight with new proclamations and the fire power of the regular and state armies. Oh, and aligning us with other dictatorships, as we are now one. Oh, and killing people around the world by killing programs and support.
God I hope I'm wrong...but if there's any "logic" to all this, that's the logic I see; warped but...
I just can’t.
Grateful for you and others here taking a hit for the team though.
