Trump Tests China
China is poised to retaliate against Trump and his tariffs, by suspending exports of heavy rare earth minerals. China and the US are the two powerhouse economies in the world, and while there are significant issues with human rights in China, we should be working together economically. Trump is stupid, playing a game with a very savvy leader, Xi Jinping. China is so big and more economically strong than it has been in years, so Trump’s tactics will hardly matter to China. Heavy rare earth metals are used in car manufacturing and other engine systems, drones and are “vital ingredients in capacitors, which are electrical components of the computer chips that power artificial intelligence servers and smartphones.”
Marco Rubio is planning to expel 10 more people to El Salvador, claiming with no proof other than tatoos, they are gang members. The Supreme Court ruled last week that the Trump administration could continue to deport migrants using the Alien Enemies Act for now, overturning a lower court that had put a temporary stop to those deportations. But it did not address the contitutionality of using the Alien Enemies Act, saying only that the lawyer who filed against Trump file in the wrong court.
Attorney Norm Eisen, who writes for the Contrarian, today posted a piece titled “The Beginning of the End of Trump.” Eisen writes that the Supreme Court is ruling cases recently that reflect a support for democracy, the most recent one being that they rulled unanimously that Trump had to return the migrant Albrego Garcia. In the case above involving the Alien Enemies Act, the high court said that migrants do have rights. It’s just that the case was filed in the wrong court.
So there’s hope.

Your first cartoon says it all. I taught in China for 12 years and China is so far ahead of America in so many things that the only way to keep America great is to work in cooperation and share the values, resources, and abilities we each have. To arrest people because of their tattoos is one reason why our country is losing respect around the world, besides being unjust and inhumane.
China is playing a global response to Trump's national response. Without special permits no one can export rare earth or rare earth products from China. Trump's tariffs have hit him where he can't respond and will leave America weakened in the world's eye.
