Today, both the NY Times and Washington Post reported that Special Council Jack Smith is urging the Supreme Court to make haste and consider Donald Trump’s claims that he is immune from prosecution. We all know—and Smith knows it too well— that Trump is trying to manage his trials by delaying them, all so that if he wins the Presidency, he can dismiss any charges against him. It’s insane that a citizen running for President, which is what Trump is, can work the courts to his advantage. He has done this kind of thing for years, and is doing it again. If he is successful, things look bad for our Democracy.
Let’s hope the Supreme Court rules that a former President is not immune from prosecution for crimes committed while in office. It makes sense to me. Even if this was a Democratic President, or someone I had once admired, I still believe that person is liable to prosecuction.
Smith said, “The United States recognizes that this is an extraordinary request,” Smith wrote. “This is an extraordinary case.”
I did the above drawing last week. This is what Trump and his supporters do, they attempt to make it all fuzzy. Lies, truth, delay, swagger, whatever. It doesn’t matter as long as you get what you want.
There’s my rant for today! I hope you are well and that your week is starting off swimmingly.
Liza, your clouds are so inviting! I may have to reconsider heaven!
Exactly.
Is immunity to performing illegal acts the purview of all former presidents? If so I can see a cartoon of Georgie Bush, Bill and Barack go “shopping” at a car dealership with a “wheee!” As they drive off the lot with their car du jour.
It’s the Supreme Court’s moment. They can, with one decision, destroy our democracy now. Do they realize it will destroy them at the same time?
