First things first, friends: I have covid! So far the symptoms are mild, but annoying. In case you are unaware—as I was until today— there are antiviral meds you can get to help fight the virus. Check with your doctor. Because of my age (!), I am elegible and will be taking my first dose tonight.
On a lighter note, I want to show you my cartoon in this week’s New Yorker.
Here below is the sketch I sent them. I do my weekly sketches on my iPad and send them in a pdf via email on Tuesdays. By Friday we hear if we sold a cartoon. If we do, I then do a new version of the sketch in pen and ink on paper. I don’t usually change much, it depends on the drawing. This one called for a bit of grey wash, but I don’t always use that.
Just for fun, here are some sketches I did in the past few weeks, ones that didn’t get bought by the magazine. They are a bit off-beat, but sometimes it strikes the editor as funny….you never know!
As a creative, you have to keep trying stuff, exploring and trying possibly odd approaches. Not a bad approach to life, keeps it interesting.
The first one I drew because I love drawing trees like that, and I just thought it was sweet that the younger tree was hoping someday a girl would climb it. And sweet that the girl promises to do so. The second drawing is one affectionately teasing a certain generation of new New Yorkers I sense have arrived in the city.
Thank you again for subscribing. If you are a paid subscriber, we will be having our second zoom gathering on Jun 14th at 6pm EST. If you are a new paid subscriber and did not receive the invite and want one, email me.
I go away for a week and you get COVID. Hope you're doing better. ;-)
Love these. Sorry about your Covid, Liza. I am just recovering from it myself. Got the monoclonal antibody infusion because of my compromised immune system, and am thinking how grateful I am for that and the two boosters. Feel better!
