Terrific bracelets! Remember when I said I would haul out my Sylvia collection? Well, here's a caption from one of her cartoons from "Mercy, it's the revolution and I'm in my bathrobe." Published in 1982. This is a case where the caption is all you need: "The senate passed a bill today today that would...outlaw abortion unless...the doctor's life is in danger. Film at 11:00" And another: "There's a special feeling about being a woman....(from the TV)...you do so much for everyone around you..." from Sylvia: "You realize you've been had." Now that I read this, I realize you DO need the drawings to get the best understanding of how funny this is. Virginia dems will take this to the Seditious Six Stooges in the Not-so-Supreme Court and then we'll see.
It is important to realize that VA is operating right now--since 2021, on a non-gerrymandered set of maps. These were drawn by bi-partisan special masters. What the VA supreme court found was that a proposal to introduce a GERRYMANDERED set of maps to aid the Dems was incorrectly proposed under VA original constitution which required a two step process. They messed up the first step by not actually proposing the amendment in 2025 until early voting was well underway. Thus voters didn't KNOW what was at stake in the 2025 legislative elections.
I've been told there was some sort of notice about the amendment before early voting started in 2025, but I haven't found it. If you know of it, let me know.
There was nothing wrong with the 2026 vote on the amendment, but without Step One in 2025 being done properly, there was no authority to do Step Two in 2026. Right now, voters in VA are not gerrymandered in either direction.
On the larger picture, I'm not sure that all the rapid fire post VRA decision gerrymandering will actually work to harm dems. There is no real way the TN, ALA, and others who are jumping on the bandwagon can know the current politics of the districts they are creating. TX found this out when it relied on 2024 results amongst Latino voters; by today, the Latino view has gone very much against the GOP. There may be fewer black representatives, but not necessarily fewer DEMS. And if Dems win on 28. we can fix it.
The president overstepped and got this redistricting mess started. Virginia’s Democratic voters won by a slim margin and all of those voters aren’t going anywhere! In fact having our votes nullified has only made us stronger. C’mon November!!
