What has been going on in American cities in the last few days— and it does not seem to be abating—is a reaction to Trump’s immigration violence. He is ramping up military presence, and that in turn ramps up citizens who oppose him, although they have been generally peaceful with a few bad actors.
Trump’s poll numbers that just came out are terrible. Americans don’t like of the job he’s doing on many issues, and they are expressing it. This may in turn cause Trump to increase his efforts with theater, military showmanship, in an effort to create a fake crisis, or give Fox News continued lie-saturated talking points about how bad the dems are or violent liberals are. Saturday will be surreal, with the absurd parade of military aresenal for his birthday and then the protests all over the country for No Kings Day. I will be broadcasting live from the protests in NYC on Saturday, you can join me starting around 2pm ET.
Govenor Gavin Newsom did us all a great favor by speaking so truthfully the other night. Where are the other democratic leaders? I know they are doing what they can on social media but we need daily national news conferences from the Democrats to counter Trump’s lies. Why can’t they do that? And where is Obama? Why can’t he come out and speak strongly in favor of our Democracy and denounce what Trump is doing?
“We are staying here to liberate this city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that his governor and this mayor have placed on this country,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, a Republican, without naming Gov. Gavin Newsom or Mayor Karen Bass, who are both Democrats. ON a large screen behind her at the news conference in LA, she showed mugshots of people who were detained in recent days, and said they had criminal records.
This is theater.
More leaders need to respond nationally to this kind of rhetoric.
Some exciting news about my documentary, Women Laughing.
If you would like to see a clip, and live in the NYC area, you can stop by for a free viewing of original New Yorker cartoons and see a clip of my forthcoming documentary. The filmmaking team, myself and my husband, New Yorker cartoonist Micahel Maslin, will be at the Swann Galleries in Manhattan on this Monday from 5-7 for a salon with wine and cheese. We will view the collection of New Yorker art editor and cartoonist Lee Lorenz (1932-1922), and Michael and I will talk about Mr. Lorenz who was the editor who brought us in to the magazine and the art on display that is up for auction.
The Women Laughing Team will give a short talk about the film and we will show a 7 minute preview of the film. Signed books will be for sale. We welcome contributions for the finishing of our indie documentary, and you can learn more about that here.
June 16th, 5-7, Swann Galleries, 104 East 25th Street #Fl 6 New York, NY
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow! Have a good Thursday eve.
YES! More like Newsom. His was the voice of leadership! And we need a dozen more doing the same thing. Answer the lies Immediately and loudly and honestly. That is the only way to regain our footing. (Congrats on Women Laughing.)
You are a treasure. Thank you!
Actually that sounds odd. What I mean is it is a delight to read your posts and see your work. I really enjoyed watching you create the picture of a cheerful group of demonstrators. I wish I had a sign or tshirts with that drawing. Your posts are uplifting in a very bad time.
