What Is Funny?

A chat with New Yorker cartoonist Michael Maslin

Another episode of the Seeing Things Podcast in which I talk with New Yorker cartoonist Michael Maslin, also known as my husband. Michael and I have been contributors to the magazine for many decades, and married for almost that long. We love to talk about the art of cartooning, and hope you enjoy it as well.

Today, we discuss the new issue and cartoons vs drawings vs illustration vs comics. And what being a rusty cartoonist means.

We also ponder what is funny and do drawings have to make people laugh?

The New Yorker’s first humor drawing in its first issue, 1925, by Al Frueh

We mention the Saul Steinberg Foundation— take a look at his wonderful work if you don’t know it, and even if you do.

We discussed the magazine’s first cartoon issue, here is the foldout double page cover, 1997. The current New Yorker is dedicated to cartoons and puzzles (not sure of the connection there). Did you see many of their past issues dedicated to cartoons, and how do you feel about the idea of grouping the drawings all together?

Happy Monday!
