We put a lot of pressure on our kids, don’t we? This poor little girl has the weight of humankind on her shoulders. This is my drawing in this week’s New Yorker!
Last night I was talking with friends about how some of my colleagues have “worlds.” Meaning that when you look at their work, before you even read it, or just as you first set eyes on it, you can feel you are entering their mindset, or their world. For example, Charles Addams had a world, and it was pretty much always macabre and dry wit. Some fine artists also have the same thing; DeKooning was one such artist for me, Paul Klee another. It’s a tone ov voice, a viewpoint, an aesthetic sensibility. It’s not always about the art itself, but often what it says or evokes. Of course writers have worlds, I think that might be easier to discern.
I don’t know if my work has a world. Do you think it does? I’m curious because I live in my own head and can’t stand outside and look at what I produce objectively.
We all have worlds, it’s how we express them, or not.
Tomorrow is our zoom gathering, hope to see some of you there. 5pm, EST, link below this paywall!
Happy Thursday!
