Liza, what a contrast. The soft quiet falling snow in your beautiful photograph against the bitter harsh cruelty allowed in our prison system because of power and wealth.
The horrific conditions in our prisons say a lot about us as a society. We haven't honestly cared about what happens in prisons for a long time, if ever. Maybe because most of those in prison are not white? Alabama may be an extreme example but what this says about us as a people is, to put it mildly, far from encouraging. Aren't we still holding forever prisoners at Gitmo? Your snow is beautiful . Happy Sunday.
Lovely photo, Liza. I like those big wet flakes falling slowly, but hope they don't start pulling down trees and power lines (says the eternal optimist /s/s/s). I don't have HBO, so I can't watch it, but a quick Google and Gemini search suggests the rumors are true.

Alabama spends billions of dollars on what is a failed system under a famously law-and-order Republican governor. I think our entire system, nationally, regardless of party, has failed, but like everything else, what to do? What to do? I wish I could think of something, but my brain, what's left of it, hurts.
Thank you Liza. Enjoyed the snowy picture but I got to tell you I was relieved to see the snow and ice melted off car in not warmth but sunlight. I have so many things to watch but need to cancel many subscriptions to streaming tv It’s all too much
Engaging issues Liza. Snow up here in Vermont where farm workers are being kidnapped by ICE. Problems abound. Alabama's prison system is long rooted in the region's slavery system and is replicated across the south. (Humane prisons--if possible--can be found in Scandinavia)
. People of color have long fought to reform or close these prisons and reformers around the country admire Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Intiative who can be found on You Tube or Ted or many other sites. He is a glorious human who has witnessed vast injustices and still retains his dignity and power. Check out his autobiography or podcasts.
There are many reformers of color, and some whites, who work to overcome class and racial divisionsand build the futre we need.. NY prisons have some progressive programs--I worked in them--but most prisons are vastly overcrowded. Chris Hedges has great insights into prisons as does Angela Davis and many others.
Thanks, as always, for your indefatigable energy, art and humanity.
