I am devastated that she is not our President-elect.

I am too. It is hard to pick myself up after what felt like a knockout punch. But she is right. We must not let ourselves just give in.

Barter, you say. Canned fruits make handy trade items and highly portable.

I am growing weary of all the “important people” trekking to Mar a Lago to meet with T-rump (or kiss his ring). I have more respect for the President of Mexico that stays in her country and makes him look like a fool!!

A few observations…

Watching Justin Trudeau pitch a hissy fit would be the funniest thing ever.

The second funniest thing ever would be if Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee subpoenaed Pete Hegseth’s mom. I’d pay to watch that testimony.

And to conclude on a positive note, I think that the Democrats would be well advised to move on from their current congressional leadership. It’s a close call, admittedly, since on the one hand there’s no fool like an old fool, while on the other hand youth is wasted on the young. But yeah, this would be a good moment for a changing of the guard.

Liza - enjoyed this, all wise words. I agree with Sen. Fetterman, a pragmatist. Let’s stop the handwringing and get ready. Kamala makes me proud.

I agree; it's not the "what" or the "why." It is the "how" that requires definition for each one of us; each group of us.

You know I have a feeling when the people who voted for the orange man wanting a change and lower prices and less immigration...those who didn't and don't understand about tariffs, about detention camps, about Medicare and Social Security cuts ...when these people see what will really be happening....and how they will certainly be negatively affected, and everything that was smoke and mirrors gets seen through the light of day....tis them, I hope, not us, who will freak out. Hopefully, the orange man himself will change their perception of him by actions which are supposed to "fix" everything but which will certainly wind up causing more havoc and pain than they ever could imagine.

As eventually happens with most cults, Trump's followers will likely have a moment of mass disillusionment, precipitated by some incident which exposes his mental and emotional pathology (multiplied by his dementia.) They will turn on him, shout him down, ridicule him. They will "freak out", indeed; and his extremely fragile sense of self, of identity, will shatter; he will be left gibbering incoherently, never to make another public utterance or appearance. Yes, yes, I know: how petty of me, how ungenerous and uncharitable. So sue me. Call the cops.

A word about Hegseth's misogyny: My inclination to condemn such behavior, to condemn the person who behaves in such a way, goes further than being an "ally" of women: being an ally is a good thing, but to me, implies that I'm sort of a benevolent bystander, someone who, though not personally affected by some social ill or ethical lapse, supports those who are affected by it. Let me be very clear: I AM DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY MISOGYNY. I am directly affected by any person anywhere being oppressed, abused, harmed, treated badly in any way. Such harm has a way of reverberating throughout human society, like an energy waveform being propagated through a system; what harms someone else harms me. I want to do whatever I can to protect myself and other people from harm of any kind, and that includes keeping harmful people away from myself and others, keeping them from committing harmful acts - certainly keeping them from occupying positions of almost unlimited power in public office.

Fetterman’s suggestion to buckle up and pack a lunch is a good one. I am basically relearning how to live. No News, more books and articles and just a smattering of Substack where I find the women most comforting, Yourself, Heather Cox Richardson , and Joyce Vance. Thank you Liza.

I will say that John Fetterman should reevaluate his blind support of Bebe who is another corrupt murderous dictator wannabe trying to avoid jail.

The both of them , Donold and Bebe seem to have avoided any consequences for all that they have done. That is very sad.

This growing line of groveling idiots trekking to Mar-a-Loco is sickening. Thanks for the clip from Kamala, I needed to hear that.

I appreciate the honesty and shared support of this website/people. In particular, folks might find David Remnick's interview with the country's first trans house member informative and heart grounding. I found an amazing array of ideas, values, principles and moments of great strength and clarity. Just check out the New Yorker site.

I have a trans daughter who is a teacher and union organizer. We talk a lot (translation: I ask questions and listen carefully). And she always reminds me: "do your own learning you are a college professor...... " I laugh and agree.

The New Yorker exchange was truly helpful.....We must come together, build community/organizations and persevere.
