Thank you for the Godwit to calm down and look for grace. Wouldn't you rather have Kamala Harris take over than Nikki Haley?

"Godwit" would be a good name for a lot of people on the religious right, whose brains might not compare favorably to this creature. Was at a wedding in England on debate day, so blessedly missed it. I'm not saying Biden should step down, but I'd be happy if he did. I've thought all along he was too old to be President for another 4 years, though I cheerfully accept that many (most?) feel otherwise.

I’m grateful to Liza for pushing godwit back into the repertoire. Now, where to use it?

The Universe telling you to relax. I spent the morning getting ready for severe thunderstorms, bringing plants in, getting clegg lights ready, checking flashlights, bringing up candles, sterno, checking generator, thunder shirt for dog, open closet doors for cats (that's their safe space in storms, charged phones, Kindles, and long about four o'clock a little rain, a rumble, and then the sun came out. Blech. Still, I didn't put everything away, because "they" (whoever they are) say more storms tonight. And least you think I'm complaining....rather be ready than have the plants, deck furniture, and furbabies flying off to Kansas. LOL. xox Love the "boid."

Poor you! I DO think it's a sign to relax. Plus, the picture is perfect for today . . . a nice cool beach when it is sooooo hot and humid where I am. Thanks!

Have a great evening, Liza! Tomorrow will be a busy one, and the beginning of a treacherous week. We start with one of the biggest decisions to ever be anticipated from the Supreme Court. Any guessing on what they will say about ‘Presidential Immunity’?

A Marbled Godwit indeed: strong, elegant and named for its appearance and the sound of its voice.

It is a North American species with relatives that are long-distance, cosmopolitan travelers covering thousands of miles per year from the Arctic to Australia and New Zealand.

Thank you, Bill! They are so beautiful. I love shore birds-- not good at indetifying them, but now we have apps!

Our county Democratic Party Chair sent a message out to us directing us to "turn worry into work" with strategic actions we have planned: sending out postcards, membership building, being a presence with tables of literature with volunteers at community activities like the Black Arts Fair coming up and the Blues Festival after that. Between the actual stormy/windy weather and the current political storm, I am worn out. But it's only July.

I understand the fog. : (

One thing that I find refreshing are the sand patterns beneath the Godwits' claws. The lines show the halted motion of the waves.

Thinking all the readers here would value this short piece by Rebecca Solnit: Once again people are mistaking their feelings for facts. Last night made them feel bad; they've converted that into faux factual analysis that Biden/the Democrats/everything is doomed. And running around doing their best to make that bad feeling into reality. It’s like no one doing this has ever felt bad before, then found out that in a week or two you don’t feel as bad, because the incident that made you feel bad doesn’t loom as large.

To be honest, I don’t give a damn that Biden had a cold and did a lousy job; as someone who has to get up on stages more than most of you, I know it’s hard and there are off nights. Being sparkly and charismatic onstage has nothing to do with the job of president. If you want to judge his performance as president look at his presidency (and most people actually have no idea of what’s been accomplished beyond a few very big-visible things partly because the shitty mainstream media don’t really cover it. And because most people are not really paying attention anyway, which is what gives entertainment bullshit like this debate the outsized weight it shouldn’t have.)

And getting him elected is not just his job; it’s the job of everyone who recognizes the choice at hand: the alternative is armageddon with a smirk, an end to democracy in America, a sabotage of our chance of doing anything about climate. Elections are made by widespread participation—as grassroots organizers, donors, and voters—not by one person. And your participation is not a gift to that person; it’s your work to shape the world you live in, on behalf of all of us.

SO well put, Robert. Particularly the notion that being charismatic and sparkly onstage is not the job of the president. So much of what he does we don't see. Thank you for your comment.
