A Pool Memory

A cartoon that The New Yorker passed on recently

I find pools funny.

Growing up in the suburbs, our neighbors across the street had one, and we spent a fair amount of time there. The only time I remember disobeying my mother was when she came over to get me for dinner, I was in the pool jumping up and down, pretending not to hear her. It was such a rebellious thing on my part (I was a major good girl, fearful of doing anything wrong because my sister was always doing something wrong), that I remember it.

Raising our kids, the only pool we ever had was a kiddie pool. It had a little built-in slide on the side, sort of fancy, heavy blue plastic. Hours of fun.

If you have a pool, enjoy. If not, there’s always a hose.
