How about “Visual Poet”?

You get a smile, nod and laugh from me! I, too, like Visual Poet. I am a photographer and I think Visual Poet applies to that, too, as does Artist. If a label is too restrictive or not definitive enough in your own mind, you (we) can always change it. Right now, I'm thinking you are a 'pleasure giver', Liza!

You express this more succinctly that you might even be aware of. You’re an artist, and within that art are those like you who have presented society as it is so that as a community we see ourselves. More importantly you speak for us. That it’s in a visual medium, a tradition rippling down millennia, not only informs in a straightforward way, but penetrates consciousness through a sense so critical - the visual - to understanding is one of the most subtle and effective invitation to awareness.

In awe of what you do.

As I called you before, and as I still "see" you, is as an Artist-Philosopher. I believe I called your fabulous session with YoYo Ma "a meeting between two Artist-Philosophers."

I'm guilty of using the shorthand description of "cartoonist for the New Yorker," but that is clearly only a part of what you do, as is probably any few word description. But fundamentally I think of you as a visual storyteller. And storytelling is perhaps one of the most important of human skills. You paint pictures, both literally and figuratively, of our world, reflecting it back to us--for our inspiration, our amusement, and our further thought. What's better than that?

Cartoonist is not a four letter word! It’s actually a sought after monicker in France…

I love the idea of a visual poet. I think that the man is "mansplaining", and the woman is not happy with what he is saying. I love watching you create.

Thank you for this post Liza. Your impression of Nikki from the documentary resonates w my own. An incredible documentary about her. I was introduced to her when I was young also, but had forgotten her. So glad to be re-introduced to her. I think you achieve similar connecting through your art. Most recently, at the particular moment you posted it, was the drawing of the man hiding under the blanket with his (wife?) telling him he can’t hide from Trump. That hit the spot and I was grateful to you for naming the wish to hide with that friendly humor. I think your knack includes a certain kind of loving care for subject and audience. Been grateful for your work forever. Thank you🌈🎈☀️

I think your drawings convey so much in just a few lines, just as a poet conveys so much in just a few lines! Both artists in tune with their world 😊

I like, "visual poet"....and I do so appreciate all you offer, share, open up for the world!

And I think, in the drawing, they want to dance, but can't decide who wants to lead....."I wanna lead." "No, you got to lead last time, it's my turn"....Titled something like "Dancing in Equal Personhood"

Truth is subtle and kind in gestures that are humbling - and enlightening to both or a mass . This as you speak of is the communication you describe L! I can relate . TY as always . Andy

Wow! I would give my left arm to be a “cartoonist”. You are amazing at what you offer into the world and specifically to me. I say, “Own it!!” Humor, in whatever form, including cartooning is a powerful form and is so important in this world. I rank you WITH poets, and I am a follower of poets and prolific reader of poetry. You are in excellent company!

This post touch me in a special way. I read one of Nikki Giovanni’s poems at the memorial dinner for my sister and brother in law held over a year after their deaths due to the pandemic. They both died within three months of each other in 2021, not Covid, but both unexpected. A devastating loss for our nine sibling cohort and their two grown but very close children. I am still having to reckon with their physical loss and lack of conversations every day. But, alas, Ms. Giovanni’s book, ‘Make Me Rain’, has helped me with the processing in ways I cannot put into words. Thank you so much for this post about her. I never knew she had an album and will try to find it!

Please know that I honor your incredible talent as a truth teller. To produce a superlative craft with constancy that brings introspection, societal awareness, ALONG WITH A SMILE in humor is a gift and damn hard. Sending 💕 Liz Donnelly.
