Thanks Liza. More and more it feels like the grade school playground! The boys gang up and change the rules! And then when they are bigger say “Oh ya?? What ya gonna do about it!?”
There are many reasons for a revolution. The ongoing enslavement of women is top of my list. Thank you Liza. We need to have more conversations around the insidiousness of the patriarchy and skirmishes women encounter in navigating this social structure.
I'm confused and exhausted and I haven't EVEN skirmished. The "s" and the "sssh" sounds the word makes are too loud for me. I prefer the softness (and so do the song writers) of the "sound of silence." My cats want to know when your cat is free for a play date. LOL. Hope you're feeling better. Nice work as always.
Love the cartoons of the kidz in the sandbox!!! Utterly brilliant. I'm wondering what conversations you have had with your beloved about these issues.
My 25 year old trans-daughter has a mix of experiences with "the patriarchy..." She spent her first 18 years growing up as a gregarious, radical "he" on the campus, of one of the country's few remaining openly radical colleges--Goddard. We spent time together wading through streams, building treehouses, cooking meals for the community, jumping off twenty five foot high covered bridges and visiting NYC so he would experience real time with real people of color. (VT is 96% Euro). It was truly lovely.
And now, as a trans woman for the past year she experiences both the rage of the patriarchy--as well the many who seek a more just world. One high school principal invited her to teach at his school after scared parents at another school rallied against her "identity." And like so many of us, she struggles to reconcile her ethical obligations as a Jewish peace activist with ancestors who fled the pogroms of Europe and favored a Jewish state--somewhere, even if it meant the displacement of others.
We're grateful for the many in VT who seek to diminish the anger and power of the patriarchy. Some stare at her long hair and muscular body as if she is a freak; others convey their gratefulness for her quiet courage. Uncertainty remains. I need to ask her about her martial arts devotion. Is there an element of self-defense that concerns her, even in VT?
Your work is brilliant--and beautiful L!!!!!!. Thnx to all readers for your caring ways
Thank you for sharing, bob. I am friends with a transgender woman cartoonist, and I have found it interesting her journey from a man to a woman, and how her art helped her along as she emerged as her real self. Thank you for your kind words, I wish your daughter the best.
Wise! The definitions are so good. Though it’s more than a skirmish if your life is threatened by a dangerous pregnancy in States where the patriarchy may demand that you die rather than receive life saving treatment. Like Idaho.
I write to create a safe space where we can share easily. Your grace builds a path the rest of us follow. Trans is new for me but where my son and now daughter wants to be. So I open my heart and when we hug that is all that counts.....amazing you are reading all this.
I write carefully as I did as a "teacher" at Goddard. Your family welcome to my house anytime. I always have a second house I can go to. Your being touches many!!!!!!!!!!
Love your cartoon. So spot on
Thank you!
I have your book! I have two of your books! I LOVE THEM! And encourage everyone reading this to get their own copies.
Will you be traveling back to China?
Substack offers a lot of authors who do their best to explain the trajectory of China these days. It's disheartening.
I don’t honk I will- they have not offered. I would if they did! Tha k you for getting my books!!!
Thank you for creating them! ☺️
Absolutely on point.
Thank you for this and for relating your experience in China. "Me TOO" sure did scare the patriarchy.
I love your newsletter -- so enlightening in so many ways.
Thank you!

Thank you! Our cat is formerly feral and a bit anti- social!

Totally more than a skirmish, you are so right. Frightening.
We’ve skirmished all of our lives...
Yep!
