If you are interested in politics and American history, if you are passionate about helping understand America, it’s past and future, I suggest you follow Heather Cox Richardson. Last night, I went to the NY Public LIbrary to hear her in conversation with Andrew DeBlanco, the video from the NYPL is below. It was fascinating to hear two historians talk about history and how it connects to what’s going on currently in US politics. Heather is promoting her book, Democracy Awakening: Notes on the state of America, a NY Times Bestseller.
Heather’s specialty is the Reconstruction period in our country, and it’s powerful and informative to understand how much we are still fighting the same battles, struggling with similar issues from the late 1800’s. Of course I had to draw her and Mr. DeBlanco, video of the drawing is also below. Here are some quotes I plucked from their conversation—there were so many great moments.
“Power has to come from those who have been excluded.”
“Democracy belongs to us.”
“We have a party that is running almost exclusively on a false reality. People are starting to recognize they are being duped.”
Thank you Liza, I did not know of the guests until I saw your drawing yesterday. I was able to watch it all live and really appreciate you letting us know. Love the drawing love the quotes. I felt a little more optimistic. Thank you.
Heather is my go to first thing each morning for a dose of sanity!
Thanks Liza!!
