My husband and I are on a road trip to Ohio today, hopefully we won’t drive off any cliffs.
Michael and I are both devoted fans of the work of New Yorker artist and writer James Thurber. In fact we both started drawing as kids because of him. Our first date was to go look at a Thurber original on auction (nothing was bought, we were young and poor). Anyway, he was born in Columbus Ohio, and we are going out there for the ceremony to hand out the first Thurber Prize for American Cartoon Art to a deserving cartoonist. Michael and I came up for the idea of this prize, and its being financed and hosted by Thurber House. I will write more after the event, and reveal who won. Google image his work, or go here to see a lot of it! Here is the Thurber House site.
Driving through this country, even if it’s only to Ohio, I am reminded at how diverse we Americans are, and how much I live in a bubble in New York. We are now in the depths of Pennsylvania, and in many ways it feels so different. I know Biden and Harris did a successful campaign stop recently in Philadelphia (here are his remarks at Girard College), which is completely different from other parts of PA. I have driven a good bit around this country, but haven’t visited much of the deep south or northwest places like Montana and the Dakotas. Would love to. Perhaps driving and drawing might be a fun project (not at the same time); a huge project, but one I could get excited about. Who are we?
Will we ever come together as a country? Even if the election is won by Biden, it will take a while for it all to calm down. I’m optimistic that we can come together. We have to. I think humor will bring us together, right?
Waiting on the jury to rule on Trump’s Criminal Trial. Their questions for the judge thus far appear to be ones that favor the prosecution, but who knows.
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow!
Have a great time; enjoy. Yes, things seem strange when you get out of NYC. And it must be exhilarating to have a couple of orange-man-free days. We are all keeping our paws crossed for a good outcome. As for the prize, what a wonderful thing to be a part of. The cartoonist must be so thrilled. Love the cartoon, as always.
You are a National Treasure. Please, don't draw while in the driver's seat.
