My mother would have seen these as a young teenager, and if she kept on into the late '30s I would have seen some of them too I suppose. I do remember Helen Hokinson (sp?)

Yes, Hokinson was also a wonderful artist. Less feminist in her work.

"...sophisticated humor that spoke to the urban demimonde"... A demimonde is not an independent woman, quite the opposite. Zola's Nana describes a demimonde.
