I drew this the other day.
But first, it was this:
I guess I hope it’s amusing because we can be pretty sure Trump will be indicted by a Grand Jury in Georgia next week, most likely. Sometimes these cookies state the obvious.
I had adjusted the caption, basing it on a drawing of mine below that The New Yorker ran in 1984.
At the time, Vice President Walter Mondale was running for President, and even though he brought a woman on his ticket as his running mate —Geraldine Ferraro— the Dems were a bit lukewarm about him. Very good man with experience and good principles—just not one who inspired enthusiasm, if I recall. Ferraro had problems for a lot of reasons, mostly her gender, but also because of stuff dragged up about her husband, a real estate businessman who eventually pleaded guilty to fraud. Ferraro was the first woman to run for Vice President— that was exciting. But not enough to get Mondale elected. I was so happy to be able to vote for a woman.
I am always a little dissapointed by fortunes in fortune cookies. Are you? Maybe I’ve seen too many in my life.
It was a dream of mine, as a young person growing up during the Civil Rights Movement, Watergate and the Vietnam War, to be a political cartoonist. This was my first published political cartoon; I was thrilled. Mondale’s office called The New Yorker and wanted to buy the original. They never did, so I still have it!
Thanks for being here, and happy Wednesday!
Once, when I returned from an epic backpacking trip in Colorado, I bought Chinese to replenish my calorie levels. The Fortune Cookie I received: "Great things happen when men and mountains meet." Whoa.
Interesting, Donnelly, how your drawing style has evolved over the years -- from the heavy pen strokes and more detailed renderings to your more spare, lighter ones of today. You should tell is more about that. Less is more, perhaps?
