Once, when I returned from an epic backpacking trip in Colorado, I bought Chinese to replenish my calorie levels. The Fortune Cookie I received: "Great things happen when men and mountains meet." Whoa.

Oh that’s hysterical. Sometimes they hit it spot on. It’s true. Did great things happen?

Great things did happen! And the brocoli with beef was delicious, too.

Interesting, Donnelly, how your drawing style has evolved over the years -- from the heavy pen strokes and more detailed renderings to your more spare, lighter ones of today. You should tell is more about that. Less is more, perhaps?

Good idea for a piece, thank you, Patrick. I will do that for sure.

Yes, the revised version is funnier, at least to me. But speaking of fortune cookies, there was a cheesy game out there many years ago, which I gather some people still use, adding the phrase "in bed" to any fortune cookie fortune. As uninspired as fortune cookies seem to be these days, this suggestion still does often help, I find. At least if there are no children at the table. Not sure I want to see Trump indicted "in bed." But I wouldn't exactly mind, either. As long as it's not in MY bed!

Walter Mondale came to a reading of mine in Minneapolis a while back. But nobody told me he was there until he'd left. I really wish that I'd talked to him. As has often been said about him, he was far too much of a good man to be elected President.

We need more folks in government like Walter. Decency should be a requirement for that office.

That’s a great story about your Mondale cartoon. No doubt the final version of your caption is so funny because it’s wacky to see the words love and happiness so close to the word Trump! I remember the Mondale/Ferraro campaign, too, and was sure we’d have a female President soon thereafter, alas. I also remember reading Doonsbury all the time, and since I was growing up in DC it felt like a local comic strip.

Phillip, I grew up in DC as well. There is nothing quite like political humor to make a point.

My mom worked for the committee to Impeach Nixon. Inside the beltway is where the real information is. I have moved from DC to CA to Midwest and it is shocking the lack of information that is offered to the general public. We have an education problem here in the us regarding how the process works. We lack civics and basic logic/math courses. Yes, boring, to be sure, but our younger generation can't think beyond TikTok and they have GUNS. God help us..

I so agree. Civics should be taught rigorously! Growing up in DC made me the person I am I believe, cartoonist wise. Did your mother have stories??

How can I even express how wonderful these are. I too voted for Mondale and Ferraro. Both great candidates I thought. I met Fritz Mondale at a conference in Westchester in the mid 70s. He’d been a classmate of the exceptional woman I worked with at Cornell and she kindly made a point of introducing us personally. Don’t think it translated to television, but in person he had an aura of power coupled with kindness and dignity that was compelling. Good man. And Ferraro? Such a good woman.

I know- although I never met either. Why is it usually we don’t get those people in office? But I think Biden and Obama and Carter are all good people. Hillary too but....

I know, the fatal flaw: female…

Wait... how did you find me at that Chinese restaurant in St Paul and draw me as I was opening that fortune cookie?!? I was living in Minnesota when Mondale ran and I voted for him. Also, Geraldine Ferraro. It was -- as Biden would later make infamous -- a BFD! I don’t care if Minnesota was the only state he carried; he would have made a far, far better POTUS.

So cool that Mondale wanted the cartoon - too bad they didn't follow through - although at the time, I think the cost from New Yorker was exhorbitant when I asked about using one.

There is a Mondale Library that might like this work. Worth a shot. Original and signed by the artist/author?

Liza, for political junkies that original is worth some $$$. ebay for at least 1k? You might consider a series of character drawings of candidates, for example, since JFK. Not sure if you do characters. There is a worldwide market now. You are valuable. Peace and hugs.

Thank you, F. I do do drawings like that. Hmmmm. I have many from recent years of live drawing. Digital however. Perhaps I should set up a store... or do eBay. I don’t know!

I'm Fletch as in Fletcher. I believe you should explore a vertical income source unless you abhor exposure and increased income. Now, that may come with consequences so a practical approach might be to insulate yourself from the dark side of the Internet. In my opinion, you have a marketable talent with minable downside. I worry you may not be Entrepreneural inclined. I am retired but wish you to be successful to generate an income stream that would support you in the later stages of your life. I want nothing from you. However, since I have nothing in the way of planning to protect myself from old age but SS that may be a concern for you. I am 80 now and only have a few years of advice now. I have 50 years of digital/Internet experiences.. I am newly relocated from CA when I cared for my dear friend with ALZ. I lived with her for 20 years but could not continue without professional help. I managed everything for her 20 years and I ran out of steam. Meryl will be fine financially. I made sure of that. She will give her estate to charity. 100% as she wished. It's a modest estate worth 3M and will increase until she dies. How may I help you because I have the time and like you

Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness, Fletch. I have in recent years sold t-shirts and mugs and some prints, but it never was a huge income producer. Perhaps my marketing skills are lacking! You sound like a very kind man to help your friend for so many years. Not easy.

I'm disappointed Mondale didn't buy the original. Making the call was a kind of commitment, to me at least. The lack of follow through feels thoughtless. I love the fist version of the fortune cookie. That confidence resonated.

I love these, although I like the updated new one the best. I was so disappointed that Mondale lost, especially as Reagan won, but also because of the possibility of having a female VP.
