Yes, I agree. We have to get into the streets. No Kings Day June 14. George Lopez of NYT did The Morning newsletter this week about what has changed and mostly NOT changed in the 5 years since the murder of George Floyd. It was a good synopsis to let people know that the reality policing and stats are about the same. And they did an article today about how part of what is happening is racism backlash due to Black Lives Matter protests. We are a racist nation. Very sad.
Ursala, all anyone need do is look at Dear Leader fawning all over a handful of WHITE South African farmers being "run out of their country, threatened with genocide (a word that used actually to mean something), forced to abandon their farms and livelihoods and start over."
As my late bride often said, "Ye gods and little fishhooks!"
"We are a racist nation. Very sad." Yes. Yes, we are. Yet, as Michael said, "...under the skin of each human kin lies a heart, a history, and hope." Is that so hard? What are we so afraid of?
I am a very old pinky-beige male who tries as hard as he can to live up to Martin's admonition, judging only by the content of an individual's character. That is how I judge Drumpf, his clown car cabinet full of orcs, and his craven enablers in Congress. Yeah, they are characters, all right. 🤯
I agree many individual people are not racist, but our national has been overtly racist. And it is rearing those sentiments nightly now without hiding it or any shame. In my book, we can all fight back be being very loud as well and, of course, give money if you can to the great legal orgs filing in courts.
Another of those events where you know where you were, what you were doing, and how you accessed the news which unfolded over a grueling nine+ minutes… And then the aftermath, demonstrations, and all that played out, authentic and true, and all that played out with blatant lies and weaponization…
Liza, your drawing takes my breath away. Your narratives too… Lightweight, heavy and everything in between.
This visage of George Floyd speaks volumes and can be interpreted by the individual viewer, as happens with visual art and with the arts as a whole.
Strangely, I see some peace and resignation, I see strength… and many other things… Still wrestling with this. Restacking here and also sharing via other vehicles. Ever grateful to you.🙏🏽
A complete and utter fabrication? Anyone spending a bit of time looking around can see that something has gone profoundly wrong in South Africa.
Are you so driven by your hatred of Trump you want to keep spreading falsehoods? Here is a young black South African talking about his reaction to Trump's stunt:
So little has changed in five years. Trump is talking about a pardon for Derek Chouven who murdered this man —held his knee on George Floyd’s neck until he died. (Trump can’t overturn a state conviction). If it wasn’t for a cell phone recording by a brave bystander we would have never learned about this crime. Thank you for remembering and reminding us of all the work we still need to do to save our country.
George Floyd has entered history, martyred in a real way having offered himself up to the burning racism our country is deservedly known for.
I didn’t have to set aside some moments to think of him, I saw the date and some headlines and the murderous image of a police officer crushing the air from his throat with his kneel as he weakly protested ‘I can’t breathe’ entered my mind and I prayed for him - and all of us.
While the nation observed riots in my city afterwards, and voters here and elsewhere remember the destructive riots in Portland, there were also marches led by school children here and a massive march for all ages recently. I have to hope children will continue to lead us the right way.
Sad truth. We judge a book by its cover. We judge a man by his color. But under the skin of each human kin lies a heart, a history, and hope.
Great post. Super well said

Amen!

Indivisible.com or Indivisible.org?
Indivisible.ORG, for sure. Good catch; I went to the other one, and thought, What???

The drawing is poignant
Thank you for this post! And for the beautiful portrait of George Floyd. It's very special.
George Floyd’s family hasn’t given up trying to reform police departments and neither should we.
Liza, when I clicked on the link in your post, it took me to a website for some kind of investment firm.
We are all the same. We are human. I grieve for George Floyd. I grieve for his family. I grieve for his loved ones.
