Birds do get quiet before storms! And there's some fascinating research showing birds know far in advance of the arrival of storms. Some migrating warblers were found to backtrack hundreds of miles and out of the path of a devastating storm front that passed through the southeast. After it was over they returned. Remarkable.
Mesmerizing. Somehow watching brings me peace. Good question in the birdsong. Sorry to say I have no clue.
