I remember when there was a quake in Southern Illinois, June1987. We were sitting in our apartment in Chicago, and both thought a big truck had just gone by the building. We learned it was a quake when we watched the news. It was about 2 weeks before our wedding, so was definitely remember it!

I lived in Chicago then as well… my first quake.

It takes a lot to rile New Yorkers. Wherever we are.

I like that about us.

I love closer to the epicenter and so the noise was more than that. The house shook and it lasted several seconds. I thought a big truck had crashed outside my house. But as soon as I got outside, I saw my neighbors all outside too --- so soon we learned it was an earthquake.

But somehow the news focused on New York - where some like the mayor did not even hear it. Well I assure you all but the dead in my down were stirred from their quietude.

I was joking with my husband, who was born in NJ, about how the media focused on NYC, and poor NJ got very little. TYpical!

Love that sketch, Lisa! It sums up the mood which, because there were no fatalities, was, well... jovial! My neighbor shared jokes circulating on social media including one of a broken chair with the caption: "We can rebuild!". What would we do without humor!

We were with kids in a classroom. We all wondered what it was. Within less than two minutes after it stopped, they had googled it. Once our curiosity was sated and excitement had died down, the most pressing of questions emerged: will we still get out to lunch privileges today? Unfazed indeed.

After the earthquake, I messaged my NYC friend from the warmth of my home in earthquake-prone LA to see if she felt it. Her response? "Oh yes! The chandelier was swinging. The masterpieces were shaking. The doormen did not believe me."
