Today, you get a summertime drawing and thoughts on politics! How are you weathering the heat wave— both weather and political heat waves?
Senator Bernie Sanders wrote a strong editorial in today’s NY Times in favor of Joe Biden staying in the race. Bravo, Bernie. I have had my issues with him in the past (not about his positions, but about his methods), but am very glad to see this editorial.
Both he and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came out in strong support of the President. In a phone call with the President, AOC told him that “his best shot at winning in November is putting forward an agenda that speaks to the needs of the working class.” Of course, both she and Sanders are champions of that cause; I think it makes perfect sense. Biden is also a champion of that class, and is a working class man, we forget that sometimes because he has been a public servant for so long. His belief in the common man and the plight of every day Americans has always been strong, and it is in stark contrast to what Trump stands for: the wealthy corporate class.
If AOC and Sanders can whip up enough fervor on this, it will galvanize young voters and Black voters (I’m not sure about Latino voters). If Biden were to ask me (hahahaha), I would say keep it simple and talk about working class people. They are the backbone of this country, Democrats need to reach them, excite them to vote. So many Americans have tuned out, which in a way makes sense because politics has become elite. Inside The Beltway haggling— I grew up in Washington, DC, so I really know what that phrase means. It is much worse than ever before because it seems to me the media is openly meddling in those conversations. Maybe I’m wrong, and it’s always been that bad—I’m not a politician and consider myself an outsider media creator. But all I see on CNN and what I feel from the NY Times is reporters “talking to their sources” and getting scoops without names. Stirring the pot. I think the nay-sayers are in the minority, and the press is simply hearing (phone and texts with their sources) a lot of worries in the Senate and House. EVERYONE IS WORRIED. We are worried because of the threat to our Democracy from a wanna-be dictator.
The support of AOC and Sanders now makes Biden’s roots more noticable to more people. My sense is that ordinary Americans who are paying attention to the news are supportive of Biden, particularly Black women.
Democrats have to rally around our nominees, this negativity has to stop. As AOC put it: “The matter is closed.”
Hopefully both heat waves will stop soon and we can get on to beating Trump. I plan to live-draw the RNC next week, stay tuned.
Happy Saturday, see you tomorrow!
I am 100 percent in favor of Biden! To have a distinguished statesman with a lifetime of experience is exactly what this immature type of political chaos needs. Those asking Biden to step aside do not have ANYONE ELSE who might step into his role. Kamala is staying right behind him. And please remember to include his international positions that have strengthen the country against some mighty powerful adversaries..
I think to hammer home to the journalist class that the matter is closed is to hint at THEIR cognitive state when they keep asking the same questions that have already been asked and answered. At what point does the subject ask, “what is wrong with you? Are YOU cognitively impaired that you don’t even remember that I already answered this?” I know, I know journalists are impervious to insults. I was once them, too and my 1,000 yard stare past the insult was a practiced trait. But… c’mon…
