Even though I am a not a Republican, I like Nikki Haley because she is a tough cookie and very well-versed in foreign policy. On a debate stage, she can hold her own; in that, she reminds me of Hillary Clinton.
Her comments on abortion at last night’s debate were level headed. I don’t agree with her, and she doesn’t agree with me on the matter, but it was refreshing that she acknowledged that, pretty much saying let’s just all get along. It’s her hawkish talk that leaves me cold and worried. At times, it seemed like she took the loud hawkish tone to simply to show viewers that just because she’s a woman, she’s not a softie— I can imagine many GOP voters would tend to believe that stereotype. Her poor ( and old) joke about high heels was cringe-worthy. I did a drawing years ago about using a spiked heel as a weapon (can’t find it, it’s so old). She claims she doesn’t wear heels unless she can run in them, and said she was wearing 5 inch heels. I don’t believe she can run in them. But, she’s a better alternative than Trump, that’s for sure, heels or no heels.
Chris Christie’s answers were thoughtful and not just a list of prepared responses; he seemed more human than anyone on the stage. But the Washington Post poll says most viewers said Nikki Haley won the debate. Desantos looked like a desperate man-boy, Ramaswamie tried too hard to be shocking and ended up seeming desperate as well. Tim Scott? He just doesn’t stand out in any way, even though he is Black. It will be interesting to see what happens as the Trump trials progress.
I’ve done a lot of New Yorker drawings about candidates over the years. Here’s one about a candidate that some of you might remember.
This New Yorker drawing is sort of like the one about Nikki Haley. I forget the exact reference here, it was published in 1995. Any guesses?
Happy Thursday!
Nikki Haley announces to the entire that she wears 5" heels, while Trumpty won't admit to his lifts.
Thanks for taking the bullet for me. I didn’t have to watch the debates!
Gov shutdown? OK bombing?? Don’t know.
