These are great. Latte man is pure LA! I was riding the subway last night carrying a bouquet of sunflowers and I thought “I’m in a Donnelly cartoon” and was left pondering my caption. 😆
True. I just had a conversation about the way my parents' generation dressed for travel. I guess perhaps the emphasis was more on looking presentable than on feeling comfortable?
My first flight was over the alps to Paris and then to JFK. Caviar. Steak. The old days. I was returning for college and my mom made sure I was dressed as if we were going to an afternoon wedding. I read TS Elliot and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Haven’t thought of this in years and years. Whew
Great memories, Patris! My first flight was to Portland Maine, to go to a camp! I didn't get dressed up (much. I was a little kid flying solo!) but I recall the general feeling that one should dress up.
Such beautiful life energy in these sketches. Many of us retreat at airports. You connect. I imagine your family loves--and cannot always keep up with--your energy.
What about external energy sources Liza? I wonder if you might like surfing at the Rockaways . Really. Rent a board and a wetsuit (hmmmm...begin with a small boogie board?) and find that natural power that will propel you ahead. It is rare and exhilarating. You might get hooked. People surf rivers in Canada and around the globe....
Pay no attention to those who might say you are too old.The movement is life energy itself....
Well, bob, you are not the first to suggest surfing to me. I wonder why? My 90-year-old stepmom in Santa Monica keeps asking me that. She never surfed, and I think her question is a humorous one:). I dont want to be ageist, but I think I am too old! I can run a marathon and have (2 years ago), but that's more controlled. Surfing seems so unpredictable! Perhaps that's the alure....
Does moving through water work for you? That is key. If so--go ahead and explore and discover. You might find great ease and freedom and, yes, joy.
Poke around, You can rent a surfboard. That might be fun. Or a small boogie board might also be attractive. I'm sure there are helpful you tube videos. And see if you can find metro area surf shops.
You need water and a beach you like and that has easy waves. That is not simple. Or head out????? Check out PR's islands of Vieques and Culebra. Eluthera seems promising. Play around.
Or come to Maine and Vermont and "tube." Local kids jump in the stern propwash of big ferry's and get tossed around like they are in a washing machine!!! . (I will one of these days).
Or simply luxuriate in the many streams that will call your name if you listen carefully.
Our lives are so enriched when we can touch and smell and feel Mother Earth, wether it is redwood trees, NYC gardens, or sandy wave washed beaches. You know this.
PS Many would love to see you offer illustrations of kids of color and their garden projects growing carrots or anything.
Elizabet Wilkerson's gorgeous "The Warmth of Other Suns" gave us (white folks) stunning portaits of families of color striving in the urban north. You could offer a garden book that traces the accomplishments of young kids of color (whose accomplishments can help build bridges for all communities).
Yikes. That is a long way from surfing. Well, you are the multidexterous gifted one. Go explore and create.

I am truly gifted. I just hit the LI beaches when I was in my 20s and lived in Brooklyn, andWestchester.I spent time alone and then invited friends who surfed.
Up here in VT I have powerful streams I can lay in and be enveloped.
Marathon at our age is fantastic. I ride trails every day all year. Last year I saw a bobcat.
(Yes I miss the strand and walking along the Hudson).
People used to dress up to fly.
I never did but my mother never stopped wearing what she called a “smart” suit, hat and gloves. Loved travelling.

You were!
Good one.
Thanks, Philip! I would absolutely drawn you if I saw you carrying a bunch of sunflowers!
Much fun in the comparisons. Thank you.
Liza, thanks for taking us along! I actually miss being at the airport - travelling, dropping off friends, waiting to pick them and family up.
Don't you live the airport scenes in the movie Love Actually too?
Travel mercies. Love the airporters.
So fascinating -- and inspiring -- to watch you do what you do. And do so well, may I add. Step.By.Step. Thanks!
Thank you, Pamela!
Love people watching. As Philip cited perhaps some difference in an LA sighting and an NYC sighting.
Wonderful piece in the Washington Post today on your work Liza and others at “The Jar”. I hope this concept continues to grow as the article mentions.
Well done!

Thanks, Paul! The Jar is an amazing concept and I was honored to be asked to be a part. And with Yo-Yo! It was thrilling.
My uncle use to say - it’s better than TV. “People watching”..
You've captured the vulnerable traveller beautifully; I know that look of nonchalance. 😉
Thanks, D.L. People are so interesting in how they approach travel.....

I wonder what a "smart" suit is these days? Temperature controlled?
“The woman in the turquoise pants seemed to be on to me, so I had to look at her surreptitiously. “. Haha. Excellent. Great imagery. Thank you!
