You always make me smile! And, today, I double-smiled with you and Michael. What a treat!

I typically never have time to sit and listen to these (from anyone including voicemails) but I have and now am committed to listening to you and your Michael next month. Just enjoyed so much of what you both so gently had to say. Stopped to mull the sheer audacity of the scribble « killed » on a piece of anyone’s expert offerings. Enjoy your Thanksgiving

Thanks, Patris. Yea, "killed" is not a fun word for anything. But despite that, the humor lives on!

So fxxing on point ! This sums it up . And good lord the next time I hear “Friendsgiving” I gona puke . But alas - the connection and gathering as you and your cartoonist community portray really is real - sorry redundant “r” words . Lol, and yay for traditions and holidays 🙄..

Forgot to add that every one of the cartoons made me laugh. Going to one of my jobs took me out of the city and into a country back road where a herd (?) of turkeys liked to get feisty. And I’ve had mystery guests because family knew they could bring a friend to dinner (on the condition they share in taking leftovers home). But the one that hit bullseye was the dinner where (this is true) my son’s fiancé was vegan, my niece could not consume gluten, my mother in law would not sit near or pass cheese of any sort. My daughter burst into tears because none of the five deserts were her favorite. ..

I hear you! The multiple diets in our family has been comical at times and very hard to cook for!!

Thank you for sharing your life. You are a calm in a sea of hurt! I love that you and your husband have the same “job”! My husband and I are both psychotherapists. It is very special to have a partner who does the same thing I think!!

Wonderful cartoons and conversation! I love the rescue cartoon. It reminded me of a recent fall day playing along the ocean in Maine where a local kid saved, not a turkey, but a lobster.

My own kid and I were thrilled to watch this girl of about eight leaving the nearby restaurant carrying a lobster down to the shore where she carefully removed the restraints and set the lobster back into the ocean.!!!!! Go we yelled! Her parents watched and supported her.

This wonderful scene of Kid Power remains with me years later . Maybe if we all took on these similar personal (and systemic) issues we would help each other and Mother Earth .Think of the Amazing Greta Thunberg and all the many many less visible peace loving kids (and adults) in Guatemala, Yemen, India, Gaza, Israel and all over the globe. Another world is possible. Thnx Liza

What a lovely story, bob. and a girl with conviction, I love it.

we are weaving new more peaceful worlds with our stories--and illustrations as well. The lobster release was 15 years ago and it feels like yesterday. Same for your art (and many selections in the NYer). We are planting seeds with our words and pictures.

These are traditions of care and power. I am told slaves would hide rice in their braids and carry the rice "seeds" forward into a future of more freedom (from: Soulfire Farm founder: Leah Penniman)

I love that notion. I do believe that certain cartoons plant seeds of change.

Yes of course. It would be intriguing to step back and see what issues at NYer and other venues have been explored and what, sidelined, either consciously or not. I know this is your work in looking at women illustrators over the past decades.(Thnk you) Who have been watchful "change makers..." (Who is your cartoon editor?) Has there ever been a trans cartoon?....the list could go on.....Your work is important Liza. We need joy and laughter.

Thanks, bob. My editor is Emma Allen. The mag has a trans cartoonist, and I spoke at length with her about her work and about whether she can draw trans cartoons for them. So interesting. Here is an article I wrote for the WaPo and I interview her and other cartoonists about gender: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/12/02/liza-donnelly-women-cartoonists-gender/
